Timothy Smoot has generally done much of the very things he’s wanted to do for decades – provide access to capital to businesses owned and operated by women and people of color.  His endgame was to prove this business sector could become an integral part of this nation’s economic fabric if financing was not such a major obstacle. As Executive Vice President of MMG Capital Group, he and his team manage the Maryland small Business Development Financing Authority and the Maryland Casino Business Investment Fund under contracts with Maryland’s Department of Commerce.

Inspired by the abundance of Black inventors throughout the centuries, the manufacturing sector became one of his passions –people whose creative ideas and constantly modified formulas help make life better for everyone. The smaller such firms of struggle mightily to scale beyond micro-enterprise stage. Smoot has been on a mission to enhance their prospects for success, spearheading a drive to offer debt and equity financing to provide a nudge to sustain and grow operations.

Brands such as those of Shea Radiance, Alodia, SoFine Foods, and Baked in Baltimore have all benefited from Smoot’s financing activities. Each of their products are now featured on Amazon and in hundreds of prime retail stores, including Wegman’s, Whole Foods, Walmart, Target, Safeway, Giant Foods and Harris Teeter. Others include the fine chocolates of Bon AppeSweet, the spirits of Carroll Creek Whiskey, and the crab cake mastery of The Great Gourmet. Smoot is humbled by these accomplishments and is searching for the next opportunity.
