Dr. Luis Alvarez should be considered a Maryland Manufacturing Star for his transformative contributions to biopharmaceutical manufacturing, particularly in the development of targeted regenerative therapeutics. A West Point graduate and U.S. Army veteran, Dr. Alvarez served 20 years, where his combat experience motivated him to pursue a Ph.D. in biological engineering at MIT. His deep commitment to improving patient outcomes led to the founding of Theradaptive, a company that uses a proprietary protein-engineering platform to develop therapeutics that can be precisely delivered for various clinical applications, including orthopedics and other areas.
Dr. Alvarez’s impact on manufacturing is profound. He has been instrumental in establishing Theradaptive’s GMP Manufacturing Facility in Frederick, with support from the Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund (MSCRF). This facility will not only enable the large-scale production of cutting-edge biologics but also foster local economic growth, positioning Maryland as a hub for biotech innovation. His approach ensures that advanced therapies are not only scientifically groundbreaking but also manufacturable at scale with the highest quality standards.
Before founding Theradaptive, Dr. Alvarez served as the founding deputy director of the U.S. Department of Defense’s Regenerative Medicine Program Office, and led a $720 million nerve agent pharmaceutical countermeasures program. His ability to translate complex scientific research into scalable manufacturing processes, while also driving economic development, makes him a standout leader in Maryland’s manufacturing sector and a deserving Maryland Manufacturing Star.
