A Journey Through Service and Spirit: Herb Banks’ life story is one of resilience and creativity, rooted in his service in the Navy, where he honed skills that would shape his future. During his time stationed in Iraq, he discovered an unexpected passion for distilling. Amidst the chaos, he learned the basics of spirit-making from those around him, gaining insights that would stay with him long after returning home.

Transitioning back to civilian life, Herb found himself in the vibrant world of craft distilling. He founded Copper Compass Craft Distilling Co., drawing on his unique background to create exceptional spirits that reflect the heart of his experiences. Co-owner and cousin, April Toyer, is directly responsible for the creation of the Whiskey Barrel Finished Spiced Rum recipe and for the layout and design of the entire distillery.

Herb’s Navy service continues to influence his approach to business and community. He emphasizes teamwork and innovation in everything he does, believing that every challenge is an opportunity for growth. As he contributes to the revitalization of the local distilling scene, he remains dedicated to honoring the values he learned in the military, proving that our past can inspire a brighter future.
