Emily English, PhD is utilizing her expertise in the CAR-T Manufacturing space to take on the vital role of overseeing the transition of Cartesian Therapeutics’ current phase of growth into a late-stage company equipped with wholly-owned, in-house cGMP manufacturing capabilities for clinical and commercial supply of its mRNA cell therapy candidates based in Maryland. Dr. English’s deep expertise is notable, as portrayed during August’s influential Cell & Gene panel “Modernizing CAR-T Manufacturing: Is Point Of Care The Future?” where she discussed the industry’s challenges and opportunities as technology and CAR T-cell therapies evolve, and subsequently how they are manufactured. Dr. English has long been a key part of Maryland’s life sciences community. She was a Venture Partner with a Baltimore family office life science investment firm, and CEO of a Johns Hopkins University spinout, Gemstone Biotherapeutics. She spent eight years at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, where she led a team of 35 scientists and engineers as Global Communications Program Manager. She served on the Board of Directors for the Biotechnical Institute of Maryland and the Advisory Board for the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Maryland. She received many recognitions including being named a Rising Star by Women in Bio, Capital Region, and received the Impact for Innovation Prize by the Maryland Tech Council. Dr. English is a proven innovator with a passion for transitioning early-stage technologies to operational capabilities and commercial products, and continues to ensure that Maryland is a key part of this industry.
