Dr. Nilanjan Banerjee is a Maryland Manufacturing Star for his commitment to education and workforce development in manufacturing, having developed a unique workforce program in  Cybersecurity in Manufacturing Operational Technology (CyMOT). A professor of computer science and electrical engineering at UMBC, Dr. Banerjee serves as director of the Center for Research in Emergent Manufacturing (CREM). CREM helps manufacturers benefit from and manage risks of new manufacturing approaches centered around computer systems for digital manufacturing.

Focused on Industry 4.0 research and training, cybersecurity research and training, and cloud computing systems creating digital enterprises for the manufacturing global supply chain, Dr. Banerjee established a “role-based” training curriculum for manufacturing including short-courses for the Manufacturing Cyber Systems Operator,  Cyber Manufacturing AI/ML Engineer, and Advance Cybersecurity Manufacturing Analyst. The curriculum provides manufacturing workers with learning opportunities that result in certifications and tools necessary to execute careers in cybersecurity in manufacturing. Through CREM, more than 300 manufacturers from small and medium sized businesses have received training in best practices for preventing cyberattacks on manufacturing operations.  CREM hosts a state-of-the-art  training facility known as an operational technology cyber range where students can conduct hands-on training exercises in an industry 4.0 miniaturized smart factory environment.

Dr. Banerjee is an expert in cybersecurity for embedded and cyber-physical systems in two broad areas; (1) Wearable Sensing and Analytics for Physiological Sensing; and (2) Cybersecurity for Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management. He has commercialized his research products as co-founder and CEO of Tanzen Medical, Inc. and CSO of LifePlus, Inc.
