Dr. Eric Wachsman, Ion Storage Systems Founder and Executive Chair, and Director of the Maryland Energy Innovation Institute, is an innovative leader who transformed his research and vision of a more advanced battery technology to an advanced manufacturing facility in Beltsville, Maryland producing safe, high energy-density, fast-charging, solid-state batteries
The state-of-the-art battery production pilot line at the company's headquarters in Beltsville, MD is expected to begin manufacturing 1MWh of battery cells this year, growing to 10MWh by early 2025 with a longer-term goal of 500MWh of capacity by 2028. The facility already provides 75 high skilled manufacturing jobs in Maryland and is expected to grow rapidly over the next several years.
Eric is past President of The Electrochemical Society, and a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, The Electrochemical Society, the American Ceramic Society, and the World Academy of Ceramic. He is Editor-in-Chief of Ionics; Editor of Science Reports, Energy Technology, and Energy Systems; and an expert in solid-state ion conductors and devices, with more than 280 publications and 40 patents. Eric has over 35 years’ experience leading large multidisciplinary sponsored contracts, including for DOE ARPA-E, EERE, and NASA, from leading numerous multi-investigator team research projects to achieving contractual performance metrics and technical deliverables.
In his role as Executive Chair, he serves on the company Board of Directors and provides company vision and scientific expertise. As Director of the Maryland Energy Innovation Institute and a UMD Distinguished University Professor he leads the State’s efforts on energy innovation and advances the UMD campus’ energy research programs.
