Benjamin McGlaughlin is the Maryland Department of Commerce’s (Commerce’s) leader for manufacturing and is one of the industry’s strongest advocates on smart manufacturing technology adoption and workforce development. As the Department’s Manufacturing Program Manager, Ben is passionate about manufacturing, considering himself a “manufacturing enthusiast."
That includes furthering the development of Commerce’s Manufacturing 4.0 grant program. He has worked with the Commerce team to add efficiencies to this relatively new program. Governor Wes Moore recently announced additional investment of $4 million in the program for a total of $5 million for FY 2025.
Ben collaborates with a number of Maryland manufacturing industry stakeholders. He participates on the Regional Manufacturing Institute of Maryland, the Maryland Manufacturing Extension Partnership, the Regional Advanced Manufacturing Partnership of Maryland (RAMP MD) and the Minority Business Development Agency Advanced Manufacturing Center boards. He advocates for the Maryland World Class Consortia and its lean program and is himself a Certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. He is the coordinator for the Maryland Manufacturing Advisory Board, which advises the Maryland Commerce Secretary on ways to encourage new and expanding manufacturing enterprises and reports to the Governor and General Assembly.
A valued consultant to the manufacturing firms that he serves, he also works with the attraction team at Commerce and county business attraction teams to promote manufacturing in Maryland. He is a former CEO of a confectionery manufacturing firm, as well as a former partner in a packaging systems automation company.
