Josh founded Harbor Designs & Manufacturing with his father Kevin Barnes to help anyone with an idea for a manufactured product bring those ideas to life. Harbor is an ISO 9001/13485 certified product design, prototyping, and contract manufacturing organization offering turn key product development and scalable manufacturing solutions. You can find their clients products in box stores, TV commercials, and even on shows like Shark Tank. Some customers like DampRid, Stanley Black and Decker, LifeStraw, Northup Grumman, Amtrak and the USPS are familiar, but just as importantly they support start ups spinning disruptive technologies out of local universities, hospital systems, federal labs and agencies, incubators and accelerators, many thanks to TEDCO funding.
Harbor makes medical and biomedical devices, consumer products, and solutions for diverse industrial markets. Josh helped build Harbor to be both a traditional service provider for large companies in need of product engineering and contract manufacturing, but also to operate under a unique shared resource model as a Collaborative Regional Manufacturing Center focused on facilitating access and support, strengthening local supply chains, and reimagining urban manufacturing as a path to upward mobility.
The center co-locates start up clients giving them shared access to facilities, equipment, and meeting spaces, and is also home to tailored programs for "Institutions of Innovation", designed to support each institutions unique needs and strategies as it relates to technology commercialization and manufacturing. Institutional collaborations include groups like the US Department of Commerce MBDA, Mayors office of Baltimore City, University of Maryland, and the Veterans-Health-Administration.
