Robert T. Barnes, retired from Northrop Grumman, made a lasting impact on Maryland’s manufacturing community through his leadership and commitment to innovation. During his 41-year career at Northrop Grumman, he served as Manager of Lean Initiatives and Best Manufacturing Practices, spearheading efforts to improve operational excellence and competitiveness within the Electronics Systems Sector. His work in advancing Lean methodologies and fostering continuous improvement influenced many in the manufacturing field.
Barnes also chaired the Maryland Advisory Commission on Manufacturing Competitiveness in 1997. During his tenure, the commission conducted a comprehensive analysis of Maryland’s manufacturing landscape and provided strategic recommendations for its future growth. His leadership emphasized workforce development, innovation, and operational efficiency, helping Maryland manufacturers remain competitive in an evolving global market.
Beyond his corporate career, Barnes served on boards such as the Baltimore Museum of Industry and supported numerous organizations, including Junior Achievement and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. His involvement in the manufacturing and engineering communities, combined with his leadership on the state level, ensured that Maryland’s manufacturing sector continued to thrive. Even after retirement, his influence remains strong. Barnes continues to contribute to the state's manufacturing sector as a Board member of the Maryland World Class Consortia (MWCC), where he supports the promotion of Lean practices and operational excellence.
